Heather Ruth Spence, PhD
Musician, Composer, Bioacoustician, Sound artist
Heather Spence creates music scientifically tuned to any occasion. She received a Presidential Arts Fellowship for music at the George Washington University, and completed her PhD in Bio-Acoustics at the City University of New York.
From weddings to funerals, from boats to opera houses, her primary performance instruments are cello, viola da gamba, piano and voice. Her compositions combine live instruments, electronic sounds, and nature recordings and can be found on CDs, soundtracks, sheet music – even phone answering services.
Merging music with neuroscience, she crafts improvisations and meditations suited to each group of listeners, drawing on genres from medieval to contemporary, from classical to trip hop.
Based in Washington, DC, she currently performs internationally as a soloist and with Sephardic, Arabic and world music ensembles.
